Get better cans
April 8, 1991
Upon walking to Eco-Park Sunday morning to prepare sites for tree-planting, members of the Committee for the Preservation of Wildlife were saddened at the display of abuse of the West Lagoon (Larusso Lagoon).
The remnants of previous recreation abounded. Beer cans, bottles, plastic and paper were scattered throughout the landscape.
The litter was disposed of in the water, grass and under trees, making the appearance of the park completely unacceptable.
Larusso Lagoon, as any beauty spot, should be treated with respect, since it is the area itself that provides the natural beauty for people to enjoy.
If people are able to carry food and beverages into the area, it should not be difficult to be responsible for the proper disposal of empty containers.
Garbage cans were provided, however, of the two that were present, one was overflowing and the other had been thrown into the water.
This is a continual problem and should be dealt with by both the physical plant and the students.
It seems only sensible that more immovable containers be provided and that students take the responsibility for using them.
We would like to thank the two members of Earth First for taking the time to clean up the area and hope that their action sets a good example for the numerous sunbathers lying among the midst of this shameful mess.
