Outdated sins
April 9, 1991
Mr. Inman’s letter of April 8 left me somewhat confused.
For the past three years, people like Mr. Inman have been speaking out against homosexuality because the Bible tells us in Leviticus that it is wrong.
Well, in Leviticus 19:27, the Bible also tells us, “Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.”
Does this mean all the clean-cut, well-shaven young men across campus are also abhorrent in God’s eyes? In Leviticus 19:19 it says, “Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.”
So, is it wrong to wear cotton-polyester blends? If so, the Gay/Lesbian Union is supporting Christian morality by encouraging people to wear jeans that are made of 100 percent cotton.
Then Leviticus 15:19-30 tells us that “when woman has her regular flow of blood … anything she sits on will be unclean (and) whoever touches anything she sits on must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening.” Aren’t you afraid to sit in your desks?
The Bible, and common sense, tells us not to judge others lest be judged, to love our neighbor as ourselves, and basically, to live and let live.
Maybe both you and the GLU should live and let other organizations live.
I’d also like to respond to Jim Tubridy’s March 19 column. It is not second nature for us English majors to use symbolism—but it is for we English majors.
