NIU’s women’s tennis (16-10, 5-5 MAC) triumphed against the University at Buffalo (16-11, 3-7 MAC) with a score of 5-2 on Sunday.
The Huskies surpassed the Bulls as they won all completed doubles matches, and won four out of six singles matches with the third match ending in a retirement.
The Huskie duo of senior Diana Lukyanova and sophomore Isabella Righi swept Bulls fifth-year Ambre Amat and junior Esmee Andresen with a result of 6-0 in the first doubles match.
In the second doubles match, NIU junior Erika Dimitriev and sophomore Nataly Ninova secured a win against Buffalo fifth-year Azra Deniz Comlek and graduate student Jagmeet Kaur with a score of 6-3.
In the last doubles match, Huskie senior Anastasia Rakita and junior Reagan Welch were leading Bulls senior Mariana Carvajal Torres and graduate student Lolina Schietekat Sedas 5-3 when the match was ruled incomplete.
In singles, the Huskies won four out of six matches played with three matches having to go to a decisive third set.
The third singles match ended with Buffalo freshman Laura Koralnik retiring against Righi, resulting in a 2-0 win in one set.
In the first singles match, Lukyanova defeated Kaur in a decisive third set with all the three sets ending at 6-1.
Comlek bested Dimitriev in the second singles match, which finished in two sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-2.
Amat faced Ninova in the fourth match, resulting in favor of the Buffalo as it was decided in the third set with a final score of 1-6, 7-5 and 6-4.
Welch outlasted Andresen in the fifth singles match with a decisive third set which finished with scores of 6-2, 4-6 and 6-2.
In the last single match, Sophomore Jenna Horne overcame Carvajal Torres in the fifth singles match, which she finished in two sets with scores of 6-4 and 6-1.
With Eastern Michigan University’s 6-1 win over Bowling Green State University, NIU women’s tennis was eliminated from MAC Championship contention, ending its season on Sunday’s win.
