Messed values
April 3, 1991
The war has not ended. The greedy—those who have more than what they need—are still killing Americans via homelessness.
Three million Americans are literally on a forced march to oblivion thanks to a society that puts material values above spirituality.
After World War II a number of British soldiers engaged in a true act of heroism after returning home: upon seeing all their homeless they began moving them into the vacation homes of the wealthy.
After all, who needs more than one home? Perhaps their Robin Hood should be canonized (Robin Hood is taken very seriously in England) and his spirit exported to the United States.
Even before the yellow ribbons start coming down, start putting up green ribbons (green, for the Robin Hood ethic: take from the rich and give to the poor).
The green ribbon symbolizes the absolute right of our destitute homeless to basic shelter. There is absolutely no excuse for a single American to freeze to death.
A country (the United States) that spends more in five hours on the military than in five years on health care can certainly provide basic shelter for the homeless.
If it refuses to do so then we are nothing but a nation of hypocrites and traitors, and I’ll join those protesters who burn the American flag.
Perhaps the heat from the flames will keep a few people from freezing to death next winter.
