Jeans for rights
April 2, 1991
Well, it seems to be that time of year again—Gay Awareness Week, and along with it—Jeans Day.
If tradition holds true, the next couple of weeks will find this page filled with letters regarding this oh, so misunderstood event.
Most of the arguments I have heard from the non-supporters of Jeans Day, is that the Gay/Lesbian Union is taking something so common and well-accepted, and changing it into something completely different.
Yes, I think that is exactly what the GLU is doing, and they are doing it very successfully. The whole purpose of picking something so common is to make people think.
Every day thousands of people on this campus wake up, put on their jeans, and carry out their day.
Now, all of a sudden, the same people have to consciously weigh the consequences of doing something that is completely natural for them.
If they wear their jeans, they will have to worry about the ridicule and chastising that comes from narrow-minded individuals.
Homosexuals also have to worry about the consequences of doing what comes naturally to them.
The only difference is that heterosexuals only have to be concerned with this one day a year. Homosexuals have to go through this every day of their lives.
To wear jeans on Jeans Day does not mean you are a homosexual. It means you believe that everyone is entitled to the same basic human rights.
So this Wednesday, wear your jeans, ignore the moronic comments, and show this campus that you do not support discrimination in any way.
Hopefully, in the very near future, people of all cultures and backgrounds will be so readily accepted that events like Jeans Day will not even be necessary.
