Nixon jumps on murder gun
April 16, 1991
Uh-oh. Former President Richard Nixon wants Saddam Hussein out of Iraq … by any means possible.
“If I could find a way to get him out of there, even putting a contract out on him, … I would be for it,” Nixon said on 60 Minutes Sunday night.
Of course, Nixon is just yearning for the good old days when Americans didn’t need justification to topple foreign leaders they didn’t like. Nixon himself watched such actions in Chile with glee when freely-elected Salvatore Allende was overthrown for being too chummy with communists.
And now it’s time to get rid of Saddam, fair means or foul. Might is right. The end justifies the means. America, right or wrong.
Pick any cliche, but the fact remains that what Nixon is suggesting isn’t the golden rule.
Yes, it’s true Saddam doesn’t respect international law much. But how can we claim to if we say the leader of an independent country should be done away with by any means possible?
However, President George Bush, the former head of the CIA, probably will be receptive to the idea.
Then again, Bush might be furious with the former president. For all we know, Bush was planning such an operation and Nixon just tipped Saddam off to it.
