Seniors’ futures feature sports-related careers

When the career light turns green for the four NIU women’s basketball seniors in May, expect them to cruise right into a sports-oriented future.

Denise Dove, Lisa Foss, Denise Lipnisky and Toby Meeks all envision some sort of sports-related occupation in their crystal balls.

Foss, NIU’s all-time leading scorer (2,500 points), is the only one of the four that plans to continue playing basketball. The Lake Zurich native has hopes of continuing her career somewhere in Europe, France or Italy.

“Italy is where I’d want to play,” Foss said. “Or France is a possibility, but I really don’t know yet. It’s all a waiting process.”

Apparently, those European squads have expressed interest in Foss, even though her 5-7 stature works against her chances. Most European teams tend to lean towards the bigger American women.

“There have been inquiries,” Foss said. “(NIU) Coach Albright says that things look good for me. I can’t sell myself any more than I already have.”

In the meantime, Foss is concentrating on a spot for the 1992 Olympic squad. The Kodak District IV All-American will vie for membership on the World Games team over the summer in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“I’m trying out for the World Games, so I’m gearing for that right now,” Foss said.

Toby Meeks intends to keep a couple of routes open. Meeks is in the process of applying for a summer internship with Converse.

“I’m trying to get an intern with Converse,” Meeks said. “Hopefully, I will be doing some sales work for them.”

When “Mercury T” is not selling athletic wear, the 5th-year senior will be rapping. That’s right, rapping.

Currently, Meeks is involved with a song on the Top-10 Dance List called “Another Sleepless Night.” The single features Meeks rapping at the end of the Shawn Christopher song.

Over the summer, Meeks will finish up an eleven-song album that she’s been working on. The expected finishing date is sometime in September.

“I’m trying to finish up my own album,” Meeks said. “If it takes off, I’ll go with that. We’ll just have to see what happens. Either way, I’ll be happy.”

Lipnisky’s road is already paved. The Schaumburg native will return to her hometown for a teaching job next semester. Lipnisky will student teach from September to December at Schaumburg High School.

When school is not in session, Lipnisky plans on an assistant coaching position for the school’s tennis and basketball teams. Currently, Lipnisky is working as an assistant softball coach for Sycamore High School.

“I would like to work on the high school level and eventually become a head varsity coach,” Lipnisky said. “After a few years of that, I want to move up to an assistant college coach, then ultimately become a head college coach.”

Dove’s future is still at the NIU stop sign. Before going on, Dove needs 22 more hours to graduate. Thus, “Double D” will return for another year of schooling.

The Corporate Communications major intends on taking more coaching classes and also desires a future coaching position.

“I want to get into college coaching some day,” Dove said. “Any which way I go, my job will revolve around some sort of athletics.”
