Need open mind
April 10, 1991
When Martin Luther King Jr. marched peacefully down city streets for civil rights, there was a lot of blind anger and blatant misunderstanding of his concept of freedom and equality for blacks.
We seem to be experiencing a very similar problem here on campus when the Star’s editorial staff blindly refuses to acknowledge the concepts behind Nardi’s abstract sculpture.
Come on people, abstraction as a major art form is now nearing the century-old mark!
It doesn’t require a special genius to understand the artist’s metaphor of integrating black and white concrete blocks, among other pertinent symbolism.
But then again, it only requires an open mind and a lack of prejudice to understand King’s message as well.
This is a university and we are here to be challenged to think … and I think King would have wanted it this way.
