Softball squad hosts 7th-ranked Iowa

NIU’s softball team (14-13) is hoping to keep its head above the .500 mark, but that may be easier said than done.

In order to do that, the Huskies must get by the University of Iowa in a 3 p.m. home doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

The visiting Hawkeyes, boasting a 29-6 record, are currently ranked 7th in the nation. Despite Iowa losing most of its recent games, head coach Dee Abrahamson realizes that Iowa has what it takes to win.

“We haven’t seen them play this season,” Abrahamson said, “so it’s tough to say what they’re like. Obviously, they know how to win.”

But Abrahamson’s team also has what it takes to win, citing its recent 3-1 record and second-place finish in the Michigan Invitational.

Improved pitching and heavy hitting are reasons for the Huskies’ recent success and Abrahamson is pleased with what she has seen.

“We’re playing much better as of late,” Abrahamson explained. “That’s what we’re out to do; get better everyday.”

One thing that may get in the way is the weather. Forecasts for the afternoon have shown a 70 percent chance of rain.

“I’m hoping that the forecasts are wrong,” Abrahamson said. “If the weather is nice, we should have two really good games.”
