Student fees focus of forum

NIU students are encouraged to attend an open forum today concerning the Fiscal Year 1992 student fees.

“I would certainly encourage anyone with questions or concerns to attend,” said Anne Kaplan, executive assistant to the president. The meeting will be held in the Heritage Room of the Holmes Student Center at 11:30 a.m.

Students can voice any concerns they might have regarding next year’s fee increases at the forum, Kaplan said. The meeting lasts until 1:30 p.m.

The committee was asked to make recommendations on the fee proposals for next year. Most of the increases were approved.

For undergraduates, the activity fee rises 34 cents per credit hour, the athletic fee increases 34 cents also and busing will go up from $2.98 to $3.54.

The total rise in student fees is $1.59 for undergraduates, $1.44 for graduates and $1.69 for law students. Students who have 12 or more credit hours are charged only for 12 hours.

One jump in fees is health services, which slid up 22 cents—prompting the committee to ask the health service to clarify its budget.

But projections are more clear now that almost nine months of the fiscal year are up, Kaplan said.

The proposal for health services is up from $4.13 to $4.35.

One issue that needs student input is a summer bus system, which would require a 45-cent per credit hour charge to students who are enrolled in summer school.

The committee considers the fees covering the Student to Student Grant, the Illinois Student Association and the Northern Star to be refundable.
