Repeating past?

There are many things that happen on campus that I do not agree with, but the recent approval of “Balance of Equality” as the design for the statue that will grace the King Memorial Commons really takes the cake.

If one wonders why apathy reigns on campus, they need not look any farther than the decision to fund this statue.

The Student Association held a referendum last year which clearly sent a mandate to the university indicating the student body did not want to fund a statue to commemorate King. The university disregarded the vote and approved the money anyway.

It’s not that students do not want to commemorate King. We simply believe there are better ways to accomplish this than in “The Table,” which asked six questions regarding human needs and is currently rusting away by the Stevenson Towers Complex.

In the Sept. 11, 1981 issue of the Star, then-editor Phil Jurik asked the same question about “The Table” that I am now asking about “Balance of Equality”:

In these days of budget cutbacks and staff reductions, isn’t there a better memorial to King, and a wiser use of $75,000, than twenty tons of concrete? I hope history does not repeat itself.
