DeKALB – Student Government Association voted on Bill SR56006 to accept Eddie Guerrero to become an SGA senator in a 12-2-0 vote during its meeting Friday.
Eddie Guerrero made his case as to why he would be a good senator and his ideas for helping the NIU community. He says that he wants to hold tabling events across the different buildings around NIU to give students an idea of what SGA does for them. While also making use of social media to share things students might not know this school year.
“For example, tabling events at Barsema (Hall), (the) Engineering Building, (Holmes) Student Center, DuSable (Hall) you name it, anywhere students are at, just to let students know what SGA does for them, such as funding, also making sure SGA uses their social media apps, Instagram, Facebook, to share things that students may not know that’s going on this year,” Guerrero said.
SGA Goal to Recognize 50 Student organizations by end of academic year
SGA announced in an executive branch report its goal to recognize and accept 50 student organizations by the end of the year.
“So far, 14 organizations have met SGA standards and have been approved by me (Nathan Gonzalez) and passed along to the Organizational Oversight Committee. The goal for this academic year is to have 50 organizations becoming SGA recognized by the end of this year. We fell short at 47 organizations last year, but I’m vocal that the 56th session will reach the goal,” Deputy Speaker Nathan Gonzalez said.
A Bill to Confirm Student Organizations
SGA passed Bill SR56007 in a 12-0-2 vote, which confirmed five student organizations. Some included organizations are the English Teaching Licensure Club and Museum Club, among others.
SGA Appoints Director of Student Life Affairs
Xavier Phillips, a junior marketing major, was accepted as Director of Student Life Affairs in a vote of 11-2-0.
Phillips was asked if he had plans to better the community from one of the speakers.
“I feel like we need to reach out to students more in general,” Phillips said. “NIU provides us with so much, but I want to personally work with every, like, whether it be an [organization] or, you know, any, like, workshop that’s going on.
SGA senate meetings are open to the public and held at 4 p.m. Fridays, with locations posted in the senate’s agendas. SGA minutes and intent-to-speak forms are available on Huskie Hub.
