Council to hear clean-up suggestions

By Sabryna Cornish

The DeKalb City Council will hear recommendations to clean up DeKalb’s environment at a special meeting Monday.

The Ad Hoc Citizen Environmental Committee will ask the council to adopt recommendations to help DeKalb become environmentally aware.

There are 14 members on the committee including Mayor Greg Sparrow, 7th Ward Ald. Jeff Monroe and 1st Ward Ald. Amy Polzin.

Some of these recommendations are:

DeKalb enact an ordinance, within one year, that requires all residential, commercial, institutional, industrial and governmental units to recycle all newsprint, glass, tin and aluminum cans, mixed paper and designated plastics.

DeKalb strongly encourage NIU to expand its current recycling efforts.

DeKalb should create a demand for recycled products.

Encourage all restaurants in DeKalb to not use polystyrene containers.

DeKalb require a universal symbol that can be recognized by children to be posted when a resident is using lawn care chemicals.

DeKalb sponsor a “Clean the Kish” day annually to remove debris and trash from the river.

Revise ordinances to require developers to preserve at least 15 percent of natural trees and landscape.

Set up a booth at Cornfest that has environmental handouts and information on recycling.

The committee also is recommending that the city council make the ad hoc committee a permanent city commission/board.

Monday is the first time council will make decisions on the recommendations, said Cameron Davis, administrative assistant to the Public Works Department.

Council members received the committee’s recommendations last week, he said.

Davis said council members will have the opportunity to ask committee members questions about the recommendations and committee members will be able to voice their concerns to the council.
