NIU women’s golf earned a 15th place finish out of 15 teams at the Illini Women’s Invitational at Medinah.
The Huskies finished five strokes back of the University of North Texas. NIU posted a first round score of 18 over par, which was 9 strokes back of North Texas – the next closest team.
NIU’s round two and three scores were significantly better than their first round score, as the two rounds combined for a score of six over par. However, it was not enough for the Huskies to improve their position.
The Huskies finished with a score of 24 over par (888).
The best individual finish for NIU was senior Caroline Kent who finished tied for 52nd place with six other athletes. Kent’s final score was four over par (220).
Graduate student Emma Thorman and freshman Mia Raines finished tied for 59th place in the invitational, with Raines competing as an individual. These two Huskies finished with a score of five over par (221).
Thorman jumped 16 spots after the final round, where she shot a three under par, the best round by a Huskie at the tournament.
Senior Jóhanna Lúðvíksdóttir finished tied for 69th place with the University of Louisiana Monroe sophomore Daniela Campillo and the University of Illinois junior Anna Ritter.
Lúðvíksdóttir’s final score for the invitational was nine over par (225).
Freshman Alexa Ouellet was the next best Huskie on the individual leaderboard, finishing tied for 75th place. Ouellet’s final score was 12 over par (228).
The final Huskie on the leaderboard was freshman Dakota Tallent, who finished one stroke behind Ouellet with a score of 13 over par (229). Tallent finished tied for 78th place with three other athletes.
“The leaderboard does not justify how well we did as this is one of the strongest fields we have been a part of. Getting into a tournament like this is a testament to the level of play we are bringing into NIU golf,” said NIU head coach Kim Kester via NIU Athletics.
The Huskies’ next invitational will be the Jim West Challenge, taking place Oct. 20 and Oct. 21 at the Kissing Tree Golf Course in San Marcos, Texas. The event will be hosted by Texas State University.
