Men’s tennis squad hosts first home dual meet against EMU

Eastern Michigan’s experience provides a challenge for the NIU men’s tennis team’s first home dual meet of the year.

The 4-5 Huskies will host the Hurons at the NIU Recreation Center Friday at 10 a.m. after 16 straight road matches.

The Hurons have five seniors who have gone through three coaches. But NIU head coach Charles Merzbacher said current Huron coach Frank Peleto provides stability for his group.

Merzbacher labeled Eastern Michigan’s doubles play as its strength, while the Huskies have been struggling at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. “We gotta win and lose the points at the net,” Merzbacher said. “We have to play a good, fundamental attacking game.”

Leading the Huskies is senior captain Erik Andersch who has a career record of 84-40. “Every time Erik has stepped onto a court this year, he’s been a thrill,” Merzbacher said.
