Volleyball squad sponsors tourney

Now is the time to put that spring fever into some serious volleyball action.

The NIU volleyball team and DeKalb’s WDKB-FM radio station, B95, are sponsoring a sand volleyball tournament April 21 which is open to all NIU students and faculty as well as the DeKalb community. The tourney will be one of several events kicking off Springfest.

Called the “West Beach Sixes” coed teams of six will compete on the sand volleyball courts near the west residence halls. As head volleyball coach Pete Waite explained, “It’s the closest Northern has to a beach and is as west as we could go.”

Registration is taking place now with a $5 per person registration fee. The proceeds made during the tournament will go towards improving the residence halls’ sand volleyball courts. Raffle prizes and awards will also be given for the top two teams but the NIU volleyball team has its own tournament.

In the collegiate tournament (April 20), NIU hosts Northwestern, DePaul, Bradley, Illinois State, and UIC in the Huskies’ only home appearance this spring.

Information about NIU’s playing schedule as well as registration procedures for the “West Beach Sixes” tournament can be received by calling the volleyball coaching offices at 753-1496 or 753-9533.
