One thing sticks out in my mind as I recall the exciting rivalry that has kicked into high gear this basketball season between NIU and UW-Green Bay (men’s and women’s teams).

And it’s not the fact that our guys were able to get the “W” on national television and a free pass to the NCAA.

No, it’s the quality of both programs and the pride each school exudes. The championship game is a good example.

Let’s face it, Coach Jim Molinari and his team were in a virtual lion’s den. Up against the odds. (It’ll be the same someday for the Phoenix when NIU hosts the tournament.)

Though it wasn’t meant to be for NIU, the team showed class through-and-through.

Hats-off to Coach Molinari for an incredible season, which deserves to continue with an at-large bid to the show. And kudos to his fine student players.

May this be the start of a rivalry that is something special!
