DeKALB – At 11:03 p.m., Tuesday on Rich Road, west of Nelson Road, a hostage situation occurred.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was given a report of a stop and hold request for a vehicle involved in a suspected shooting in Rockford, according to a release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
The vehicle was identified by traffic cameras at Peace and Mercantile drive. The information was given to patrol units, who attempted a traffic stop for the vehicle. The vehicle fled the scene and refused to stop, according to the press release.
The vehicle’s tires were deflated by stop sticks, which were deployed by DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputies. Once the vehicle was stopped, it was discovered there were two occupants in the vehicle, and one was being held hostage.
Due to the hostage situation, the DeKalb County Special Operations Team was activated. The Operations Team also included hostage negotiators, according to the press release. The hostage was released unharmed.
The suspect was armed with a handgun, and negotiations lasted for several hours. Afterward, the suspect pointed his gun at police and fired several rounds. Police returned fire, killing the suspect.
On Friday, the suspect was identified as 42-year-old Abram Perez from Rockford. The cause of death is pending results from toxicology along with an autopsy.
“The Illinois State Police and the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office have been contacted to conduct an outside independent investigation into this shooting,” according to the press release.
