For affordable clothing, NIU students don’t have to go far.
The Huskie Closet is a student-led project that offers free second-hand casual and business clothing to NIU students and members of the surrounding community.
Located in the Chick Evans Field House, Room 102, it is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays.
“The Huskie Closet is a student-run nonprofit here at NIU where we collect donated clothes and then we give them out to free to our student body and our teachers and our community,” said Huskie Closet volunteer senior NNGO and political science major Maren Blakeney.
Shopping isn’t the only reason to visit the Huskie Closet. They also accept clothing donations and are always looking for volunteers.
Volunteers can help process donations, stock inventory, fold and arrange clothes, organize clothing drives or give assistance to students who are shopping.
In the future, the Huskie Closet hopes to expand their organization to help provide environmentally friendly and accessible clothing to more people.
“We also are working on, this semester, moving out more into the community and getting to work our clothes on the road program,” Blakeney said.
While not free, another resource for NIU students’ affordable clothing needs is the Barsema’s Closet, located in Barsema Hall, Room 309. It specifically carries business attire.
