CAB to kick off Comedy Week
March 18, 1991
For students less than anxious to begin the cycle of classes and studying again, the Campus Activity Board offers Comedy Week.
AB is sponsoring the fourth annual Comedy Week Tuesday through Friday at 8 p.m.
“We’re hoping to keep the crowd coming with our comedy show,” said Jennifer Spaulding, CAB special events coordinator.
“We’re trying to do the best we can and improve our program,” Spaulding said.
The shows on Tuesday through Thursday will be held in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium in the Holmes Student Center.
Billiam Cornell will perform Tuesday. Cornell has had appearances on “The Tonight Show,” “Evening at the Improv,” “Comic Strip Live,” MTV, Showtime and “Caroline’s” on the Arts & Entertainment network.
Wednesday will bring Happy Cole to NIU. He is a Tampa, Florida resident and has won the 1984-85 Florida Laff-Off and a 1986-87 “Star Search” competition.
On Thursday, NIU will get a taste of Jeff Marder who premiered March 9 on HBO’s “One Night Stand.” Marder is labeled as a “cerebral comic” working from “both hemispheres” of his brain.
On Friday, NIU can see comedian Larry Miller perform in the Duke Ellington Ball Room. He is recognized for portraying the suck-up salesman in “Pretty Woman.”
Miller regularly appears on “The Tonight Show” and David Letterman. He has been in feature films, “Cut Cold,” “Fugitives” and “Pretty Woman.”
The Chicago Sun-Times called him “one of the best stand-up comics working today.”
Miller’s performance will kick off this year’s Northern Night Life which will go on until 2 a.m.
“It’s fun to see all the students in one spot with so many things going on. There’s a little bit of something for everyone,” said Diane Gautcher, CAB office manager.
Some of the activities will include a pie throw, Battle of the Bands, the NIU Black Choir, the Black Theatre Workshop, “The Three Stooges” film fest, twister and a 10 p.m. showing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
