Coming off of a dominant showing at the Michigan State Open, NIU wrestling (0-1) competed against the Northwestern University Wildcats (1-0) in its first meet of the season Saturday night.
Falling behind 14-4 after the fifth match, NIU’s night ended almost as soon as it started. The Huskies finished the meet losing 29-8 to the Wildcats in 10 matches, logging their first loss of the season.
The Huskies picked up their first win of the meet after 133-pound redshirt sophomore Markel Baker won over Northwestern sophomore Massey Odiotti in a 14-3 major decision. This marked Baker’s third win of the season.
In his first win of the season, 285-pound redshirt junior Jacob Christensen secured NIU’s other 4 points on the night. Christensen recorded a 12-2 major decision win over Northwestern redshirt first-year Dirk Morley.
Northwestern took down NIU with 5 decision wins, 2 technical falls and 1 major decision win. This loss brings the Huskies to a 3-9 record against the Wildcats, losing by over 20 points for the first time since February of 2023.
