With the winter season fast approaching and finals week upon us, times can be stressful and seasonal depression can go into overtime.
That’s why it is important to find productive and healthy ways to de-stress and cope with the negative emotions that come with this time of year.
“The holidays may be fun and joyful for some people, but there can be a social pressure to be of good cheer, even when you are not,” said Michael Langer, graduate research assistant at the Counseling and Consultation Services department.
Langer went on to mention how this time can be difficult for those dealing with financial and emotional concerns as well as for people experiencing loss.
“For those who have experienced the loss of a loved one, the holidays may present a sort of double-grief: grieving the one who is no longer with you and grieving the holiday memories that will never be the same again,” Langer said.
Langer also mentioned being less physically active in addition to the concerns of these winter months can also lead to negative mental health reactions.
Langer shared some tips to help when feeling down or stressed.
FEELING DOWN?
Stay active, get your heart rate up and take a break from regular substance use (alcohol, cannabis, even caffeine). Keep a journal, writing down one thing you’re thankful for each day. Check in with your doctor.
GRIEVING?
Share your grief with a trusted friend or family member, find ways to incorporate memorials into your new holiday traditions and reach out for professional help.
STRESSED OR OVERWHELMED?
Keep active and get your heart rate up. Practice breathing techniques for 2-3 minutes (4 seconds in through nose, hold for 7 seconds, slowly out through mouth for 8 seconds).
Take a pause when you’re feeling amped up, breathe deeply, and say a positive intention for your day such as “I can’t change my circumstances, but I can be my best self.”
Use a mindfulness app, such as the Healthy Minds app, available on the Apple and Google Play store.
SOCIAL DE-STRESSING
Sometimes interacting with family members can be tough. Give yourself a break and step away for a few minutes if you need to. Give others a break and consider that they may be going through a hard time too. If you’re upset with someone, postpone talking about it until you’re in a better state of mind.
