“Marvel Rivals” has gained a considerable player base since its launch last month, otherwise known as “Season 0.” The game’s recent addition has created even more intrigue for players.
On Jan. 10, an update was released as a part of the shift into the game’s next season, titled “Eternal Night Falls,” which heavily carries a vampiric and gothic theme.
This season brings two new characters, a new spooky, in-game location and a new battle pass with additional outfits for characters already in the game.
These two characters are well-known with Marvel fans, those being Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, the brains and heart of the Fantastic Four superhero team.
Each hero also came with a brand new white and blue design sporting the iconic blue four, unique from their original outfits but still respecting their all-blue jumpsuits from the comics.
Mr. Fantastic, otherwise known as Reed Richards, is the leader of the Fantastic Four and serves in the “duelist” category – a character that focuses mostly on dealing damage – in the game.
In the comics, Mr. Fantastic had the ability to stretch his limbs to capture or damage his opponents and frequently used this power in and out of costume.
This ability is reflected exceptionally well in-game as he is able to stretch his arms toward the opponent to deal damage or pull the opponents toward one another or himself. He can also inflate his body to deflect attacks back toward the enemy team and to tank damage.
Invisible Woman, also known as Sue Storm, has the ability to generate force fields to protect herself as well as her allies. Naturally, she serves as a “strategist” – a support character in the game – by protecting and healing herself and her allies.
Just like in the comics, she also has the ability to cloak herself and her allies while healing them and allows the team to sneak up on an enemy or enable a safe escape in dangerous situations.
The Human Torch and The Thing, otherwise known as Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, will be released on a later date as a pair just like Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman.
Two new, iconic locations from the Marvel universe have been added with the new season, those being the streets of Midtown and Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. The Sanctum Sanctorm will arrive later in the season with the release of the Thing and the Human Torch.
The darkened streets of Midtown are desolate of any civilian activity and feature glowing statues of Iron Man and Captain America in front of Avengers Tower.
Fans of characters such as Daredevil and Spider-Man may recognize buildings such as Fisk Tower and the Daily Bugle as these locations served as the headquarters of some of their more aggravating antagonists.
The Baxter Building, the headquarters of the Fantastic Four, can also be found in Midtown with references to Mr. Fantastic’s lab and Herbie, the team’s robot assistant.
Grand Central Station is also an explorable location. However, it doesn’t have any trains running due to the building being damaged with some of the trains running off the tracks and onto the platform.
Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman have some of their comic book variant appearances, with Mr. Fantastic getting his “The Maker” appearance and Invisible Woman donning her “Malice” outfit. Other characters received brand new designs to pair with the dark, vampiric theme of Season 1.
These characters are Iron Man, Wolverine, Adam Warlock, Scarlet Witch, Loki, Moon Knight, Peni Parker, Magneto and Rocket Racoon, and each of their new cosmetic outfits reflect the season’s theme with black, red and gold coloring.
“Marvel Rivals” has years and years of iconic Marvel characters and locations to choose from and it will be exciting to see which ones will be added next.
