Throughout your college journey, there are many things that you wish you would’ve known before starting college, such as the importance of getting involved, staying ahead in classes and seeking help when you need it.
NIU students gave their thoughts on what they wish they knew before starting college.
What do you wish you knew before starting college?
Md Eyasin Hossain, a graduate student in mechanical engineering, is using his engineering experience to put toward a business he wants to start.
Q: “What is something you wish you knew before starting college?”
A: “I’m an international student, so when I was in my country, I started college maybe in 2016. Before that, I had a plan to do business, like cattle farms or something like that. Then this is also my dream now after completing engineering, maybe I could go for that.”
Q: “So do you wish that you had a bigger picture of your dream before you started school?”
A: “Not really, now I have so much experience from doing engineering in college and most of them I can apply and I will go for that. So I know product cost analysis and I can apply that to my business. So I think that would be helpful for me.”
Oladipo Olowe, a sophomore mechanical engineering major, believes tutoring and having people who support you is important.
Q: “What is something you wish you knew before starting college?”
A: “I wish I knew how much I rely on support groups and tutoring because it’s really helpful to get other people’s perspective on the work but also have people to ask for assistance.”
Georgia Manning, a sophomore accountancy major, believes it is important to work ahead in her classes.
Q: “What is something you wish you knew before you started college?”
A: “I wish I knew the importance of working ahead in my classes so that I’m ready for the next lecture.”
Ashanti Cummings, a junior pre-intended nursing major, wishes she took college credit before starting college.
Q: “What is something you wish you knew before starting college?”
A: “I wish I knew to take college credit courses before coming to college.”
