She-women beware of silk
February 5, 1991
Welcome to the 1990s in the U.S. where aybody can get equal pay for equal work, all citizens over 21 are eligible have the right to vote and T.V. anchorwomen can be required to wear silk blouses so they look more “feminine.”
The Chicago Sun-times reported Monday that they heard WBBM-TV in Chicago, a CBS affiliate, was planning to require its three female news anchors to wear silk blouses on camera.
Supposedly, the idea behind this branchild was to help boost ratings by making the women appear more “feminine.”
This would of course be a necessary move since the women look undeniably masculine in a soft white or lacy pink cotton blouse. There is an obvious need to ban such powerhose outfits.
In response to the quick criticisms and jokes that flew by early Monday, CBS officials denied ever saying or even hearing such things. And the station’s anchorwomen would not comment.
Hopefully this was just a dumb rumor or a publicity stunt on the part of CBS and the station managers didn’t really consider such a childish mandate.
Because if news programs try to require sexier dress codes for women, they might actually try to make some of the men look sexier as well.
