Greek minority
February 14, 1991
A quick point of clarification regarding The Northern Star’s Feb. 8, editorial titled “NIU paradox: Greek Week.”
The editorial states “Greek Week is for white greek organizations.” Unfortunately, the authors of the editorial are misinformed. They do not take into account a minority-based fraternity by the name of Sigma Lambda Beta.
Sigma Lambda Beta gained colony status within the Interfraternity Council prior to finals week of last semester. The fraternity itself is predominatly Hispanic, and will be participating in a number of Greek Week activities.
“It’s too late to change anything now,” states the editorial, but the brothers of Sigma Lambda Beta beg to differ.
Last semester Sigma Lambda Beta occupied, and continue to occupy, a house on Greenbrier Road. It has participated in various philanthropies, social and service activities and has been in accordance with IFC policy.
Being the first minority-based fraternity in the IFC, the Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity is unprecedented in its actions, and hopes to set an example for future minority-based fraternities and sororities.
Greek Week will continue as it has in the past, to be dominated, for the most part, by white fraternities and sororities.
But the men of Sigma Lambda Beta will also be a part of the celebration. Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity is the perfect example of an NIU organization putting the philosophy of “Unity in Diversity” into action.
