Men’s team trounces WIU
February 11, 1991
There’s an expression that you win sjome and lose some. NIU men’s swimming coach Dave Clark could use that expression.
On Friday, the Huskies chalked up a 139-104 dual-meet victory over Western Illinois, but on Saturday, it was NIU on the low side of a 141-96 meet with Northwestern. The split left NIU with an 8-5 mark.
In the win over Western Illinois, the Huskies had relay units finish one-two in the opening 400-yard medley and then had a one-two-three showing by Steve Beck, Ralph Sprake-Jones, and Eric Beck in th 1,000-yard freestyle that staked NIU to an early 31-5 advantage.
Needless to say, NIU never looked back, winning seven of the other 10 individual events while WIU claimed the final relay.
Against Northwestern, Huskie highlighs were hard to come by. Clark did praise Mark Oostman’s 200-yard breaststroke win over Chris Cruise while also praising Art Sanchez and Todd Klumb for their efforts.
