NIU track and field continued their success this season, taking two victories in high jump on Valentine’s Day while competing in two events.
The Huskies competed in the Grand Valley State University Big Meet in Allendale, Michigan, and the Chicago Indoor Championship in Naperville. Both competitions took place on Friday.
The Huskies won the high jump competition in both meets with victorious performances by seniors Kamiya Dendy and Samira Rosenfeld.
GVSU BIG MEET
At the GVSU Big Meet, the Huskies continued their dominance with seven athletes finishing in the top eight with four in the top four.
Dendy stole the show at the GVSU Meet, winning the high jump. She cleared the height of 1.77 meters, tying for the top mark in the Mid-American Conference this season.
After finishing as NIU’s top high jump performer last week, freshman Jasmijn Raes posted another top five outing. Raes finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.69 meters.
Sophomore Sadiya Shamsid-Deen managed to take fifth in the 400-meter open, beating last week’s personal record time of 56.51 seconds with a time of 55.61. Her time ranks as the 10th fastest time in the MAC this season.
The Huskies’ success extended outside of high jump, having four Huskies finish in the top 4 in Friday’s meet.
Senior Xiomora Malone finished fourth in long jump with a score of 5.39 meters.
The second best performance from a Huskie athlete in the jump competition was by freshman Precious Umukoro who finished third in triple jump, posting 12.03 meters.
Junior Aniya Barton also competed in the triple jump, finishing eighth after jumping 11.08 meters.
CHICAGOLAND INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP
At the Chicagoland Indoor Championship, junior Ella Bertram threw her way to fifth place in the shot put with a mark of 11.46 meters.
Rosenfeld was the highlight of NIU’s lineup, winning the high jump by reaching heights of 1.68 meters.
Rosenfeld’s first place jump of 1.68 meters currently ranks 17th in the MAC this year. Rosenfield, Dendy and the rest of the high jump team are off to an impressive start for the season.

The Huskies’ next event is the John Gartland Invitational hosted by Indiana State University. The John Gartland Invitational is an all-day event on Saturday and will be located in Terre Haute, Indiana.
