NIU track and field continued their streak of victories in the high jump event with senior Kamiya Dendy taking first place for the second week in a row.
Dendy and the Huskies competed in the John Gartland Invitational on Saturday morning in Terre Haute, Indiana, hosted by Indiana State University.
The Huskies didn’t just perform well in the high jump event, as 10 Huskies finished in the top-eight in their respective events. NIU’s individual success resulted in a top-three team finish, posting 55 combined points in this invitational.
The Huskies had their fingerprints all over the high jump event with three competitors finishing in the top-six, including the first place winner Dendy. Dendy won the high jump after clearing the mark of 1.72 meters.
Freshman Jasmijn Raes finished in third place after clearing 1.68 meters. Raes and Dendy have taken turns at the top at every meet so far to start this season.
NIU senior Samira Rosenfeld also finished in the top 10, earning sixth place with a 1.58 meters finish.
Dendy wasn’t the only victor for the Huskies on Saturday, as graduate student distance runner Bailey Wilk was crowned first place in the women’s 3,000-meter run with a personal record time of 10:26:31.
Sophomore Sadiya Shamsid-Deen sprinted her way to a second place finish in the women’s 200 meters with a time of 25.54. Shamsid-Deen finished just .14 seconds behind first place.
In the 400 meters event senior Olivia Southby finished in seventh place with a 1:02.85, .30 seconds away from her personal best.
Freshman Esther Momalife finished in third place in the 60 meters finals after finishing with a personal record in the preliminary round with a time of 7.82.
Freshman Sam Huber was right behind Momalife finishing sixth in the finals with a 7.96 time. The Huskies have multiple freshmen and young competitors that are blowing the competition away early this season.
To round out the events, senior Xiomara Malone long jump standout finished in fourth place again, this time with a season-best 5.40 meter jump. She has consistently finished in the top-five and was a key factor in the Huskies’ top-three finish.
