Gymnasts maintain hot streak

With almost two months left before the NCAA national gymnastics meet, the NIU women gymnasts continued performing in championship-style this weekend.
The Huskies added two more wins and another school record to an already outstanding season during NIU’s on-the-road victories over two east coast schools.
The Huskies (10-0) took on George Washington University Thursday in a 188.20-186.00 victory that produced a record-tying team performance on vault with a 47.30 point total.
True to their reputation, the Huskies turned around Saturday and broke the team vault standard at University of Maryland with a 47.40 team total on vault. NIU easily defeated Maryland 187.60-183.95 despite the lengthy amounts of travel time in three days.
“With the travel involved, we had fewer training days in the gym this week and I think it showed in little ways. So we still know we can do better. All-in-all, it was a great trip,” NIU coach Bobbie Cesarek said. “Thanks to all the family and friends, the Maryland meet felt like a home meet.”
Perhaps most notable for the Huskies was Vicki Thimgan who captured the all-around honors at UM with 37.80 while teammate Cindy Hemstad followed a close second with 37.55 in the four-event point total.
The Huskies ran away with the blue ribbon in three of the four events at Maryland. Thimgan shared top honors on the balance beam (9.60) with Sheryl Kurowski and Cindy Hemstad took the top spot on the uneven parallel bars (9.50). That performance was nearly matched by NIU’s Martha Unger who came in second (9.45).
And on the floor exercise Unger was forced to share the winner’s circle with Hemstad, who tied the 9.60 first-place score.
“Vicki (Thimgan) obviously did a nice overall job and so did Sheryl (Kurowski),” Cesarek said. “They did really well in all their events and were really solid competitors.”
