Sorority shows support, sponsors events

An NIU sorority did its part Tuesday for U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia by selling yellow ribbons.

Sigma Gamma Rho had a table in DuSable Hall for a Valentine’s Day raffle, a tribute to the troops and tickets to Greek Scene.

Students paid quarters for yellow ribbons and signed a large card that will be sent to a battalion in Saudi Arabia. They then entered the Valentine’s Day raffle, with three candy-assortment prizes being given.

Tickets also were sold for Greek Scene, which is scheduled for Saturday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. The annual event is held during Black History Month.

“It’s a party. Everyone can come,” said Judy Moncrieffe, treasurer of Sigma Gamma Rho. The event is supposed to unify greek organizations, she said.

A drawing also was held to choose the six judges for the Greek Scene performances. For the judges, entrance to Greek Scene is free.

“The judges are all non-greek members to make judging more fair,” Moncrieffe said. Three undergraduate and three graduate judges were chosen.

Moncrieffe was responsible for setting up the booth, but said, “we’ve all been trying to sell the tickets for Greek Scene.”

Greek Scene will be held in the Chick Evans Field House. “Turnout is usually so large,” said Wendy Washington, epistler of Sigma Gamma Rho.

Tickets for Greek Scene will be on sale for the rest of the week.
