DeKALB – NIU softball (12-21, 7-7 MAC) shut out the Bowling Green State University Falcons (13-24, 5-8 MAC) in Sunday’s matchup, winning by a score of 4-0.
“The pitching performances all weekend were outstanding, so I’m just proud of them,” said head coach Kathryn Gleason.
NIU sophomore outfielder Katy Ramage drove the offense early in the game. She doubled down the left field line, scoring senior first/third baseman Madison Mathews and junior utility player Danielle Stewart. Ramage would then make it home on a throwing error for a little-league home run, making the score 3-0 in the first inning.
“Oh that was a great feeling,” Ramage said. “You know, you want to put runs on the board early, so that was definitely a confidence booster going into the first inning, and it got us 3-0. That’s always good especially for the pitchers, you know, gives them a little bit of cushion early on.”
Mathews followed up by singling in the fifth inning to bring home another run, extending NIU’s lead to 4-0.
Senior pitcher Madison Carlson threw her first complete game of the season. She didn’t give up a single run, and struck out 4 batters.
“I feel like it was one of my best performances this year,” Carlson said. “I haven’t pitched a whole game yet this year, so it was nice to get through all seven innings and have them scoreless.”
