Totus Tuus Keely

Totus Tuus Keely, Senior Photojournalist

Totus Tuus Keely is a sophomore mechatronics engineering major serving as the senior photojournalist for the Northern Star. He began as a photographer in the spring 2024 semester. Outside of his busy class schedule, he enjoys photographing sports and capturing the emotions of fans and players. He was able to travel and photograph the historic football win against No. 5 Notre Dame in 2024. Along with photography, he enjoys performing in the World Music Program and the NIU Pep Band as well as constantly expanding his musical taste.

Ajarn Chamni Sriparam, director of the Thai Music Ensemble, opens the performance with a solo performance on the Khaen. Chamni Sriparam is “known as the King Khaen or Kaen Man” according to John Hartmann. (Totus Tuus Keely | Northern Star)

John Hartmann, former professor of Thai language and culture at NIU, introduces the instrument Wot and how it is constructed. Hartmann also mentioned the environment’s roles in crafting the instruments such as the species of bamboo used for the Khaen due to its long segments. (Totus Tuus Keely | Northern Star)

The Piphat Ensemble, consisting of all percussive instruments except for the Pi Nai, performs their first piece, “Hao.” The instruments demonstrated traditional Thai instruments made from either bamboo or metals. (Totus Tuus Keely | Northern Star)

Ajarn Chamni Sriparam joins the Piphat Ensemble during the Thai Music Ensemble Concert Tuesday. Their song “Hao” featured the Pi Nai which sounds most similar to a duck quack. (Totus Tuus Keely | Northern Star)

The Piphat Ensemble of the Thai Music Ensemble perform “Hao” as the first ensemble piece of the concert. The Piphat consists of the Ranat ek, Ranat thum, the Ching, Krap, Pi Nai, Khong wong yai,Taphon and the Klong that. (Totus Tuus Keely | Northern Star)

The Ponglang Ensemble of the Thai Music Ensemble perform their first song “Lai Ponglang.” The Ponglang Ensemble was joined by Wanwipa Na Udon on Pipa for only this piece. (Totus Tuus Keely | Northern Star)
