Across cultures and centuries, certain foods and herbs have earned a reputation for setting the mood. Whether they actually work is another question, but that’s part of the fun.
With Valentine’s Day, right around the corner, couples may look to try and spice things up. Whether you’re in a committed relationship or just wanting to have a little fun, sometimes a touch of something indulgent can help set the mood.
Named for the Greek goddess of love Aphrodite, aphrodisiacs have been used for millennia. From oysters to dark chocolate, strawberries and spices, these indulgences have long been edible symbols of passion.
Even if their sensual reputations is not scientifically proven, it’s worth understanding why aphrodisiacs are associated with pleasure. Oysters, for example, have long been associated with romance, and do have other known health benefits, such as high zinc, antioxidants and immune support, according to the National Institute of Health.
Dark chocolate is another food that is known to increase mood and stimulate the release of endorphins.
Herbs and spices like chili peppers and ginseng, also have a reputation in traditional medicine for having health benefits.
NIU offers a number of resources and courses centered around nutrition and dietetics, that can be helpful in understanding the various effects of foods.
Jonathan Flores, a graduate student in nutrition and dietetics, shared that typically foods that have a reputation for being aphrodisiacs are helpful for a balanced diet and improved mood, in particular chocolate, with a high content of cocoa and strawberries.
“Most aphrodisiac foods help indirectly. Some foods like oysters, dark chocolate, provide nutrients to support hormone health,” said Flores.
Flores also said that chocolate and strawberries can improve blood flow, which may then improve wellness. In particular, dark chocolate, with a high percentage of cocoa, can relax blood vessels.
Besides the aforementioned foods, Flores also said that spicy food can increase excitement and pleasure.
“But none of those things, quote on quote, turn on libido by themselves,” said Flores.
Flores also said that many things can affect sexual desires, including stress, sleep and overall mental and physical well-being.
“So the best way to support a healthy sex life is a balanced diet, regular exercise and good emotional well-being,” said Flores.
Near campus you can find these items and more at Jewel-Osco, located at 1320 Sycamore Rd, and Walmart, located at 2300 Sycamore Road. Alternatively DeKalb Confectionary located on 149 N. 2nd St. has a plethora of dark chocolate for selection.
So, while aphrodisiacs can’t promise a miracle in the bedroom, if you just wanna spice up things and have fun then some of these foods might be worth trying. In the end, it’s about enjoyment and open honest communication.
