DeKALB – For many college students, Valentine’s Day is filled with celebration, partying and romantic dates.
Although the day should represent prioritizing time with your partner, safety is also of major importance.
NIU Department of Police and Public Safety Chief of Police Jason John shared some tips on how to stay safe when celebrating Valentine’s Day.
“If you’re going to be drinking alcohol, be smart about those kinds of things,” John said. “Meet people, especially new people, safely if you’re meeting somebody for the first time. Meet in a public place.”
It is also important to keep the NIU Safe App in mind if you are out alone.
“The NIU Safe App is a big deal. It has safety features,” John said. “We have a personal panic alarm pretty much in the palm of your hands.”
Students are encouraged to use the app’s features, such as the walking escort feature, if they ever feel unsafe walking home alone late at night.
