NIU bounces back with big win

By Steve Dennis

Good teams bounce back from tough losses.

Less than 48 hours after the NIU women’s basketball team’s humiliating 91-66 defeat at Northwestern, the Huskies regained their winning form Thursday night by pouncing on Wright State, 86-55, in Ohio.

Four Huskies scored in double figures to lead NIU (18-5, 10-0) to its 25th consecutive win over a North Star Conference opponent and 10th league triumph of the 1991 season.

“We looked really good,” NIU coach Jane Albright said. “Everybody got a lot of minutes so it was a real team effort.”

The 50 fans in attendance probably would have never agreed with Albright if the game was only 2:48 long. NIU started out ice cold from the floor, connecting on one of its first 11 attempts.

But Wright State failed to capitalize and only led by a bucket (4-2) in the early going. That’s when Dianna Wingis racked up a three-point play that ignited the Huskies on a 9-2 run. But the points weren’t Wingis’ specialty on the evening. The sophomore ripped down a career-high 14 rebounds which shadowed her eight points.

“We wanted somebody to be an animal on the boards,” Albright said. “It was really great to see Dianna get her career-high in rebounding tonight. Rebounding dictates so many things, so that definitely helped us.”

Wright State climbed to within three (20-17) at the 9:06 mark, but the Huskies rattled off eight in a row and took a 42-31 advantage into the lockerroom.

Lisa Foss tallied 11 of her game-high 17 points in that first half. But it was in the first 4:45 of the second half that the Huskies sank the Raiders’ ship.

WSU went scoreless over the stretch as NIU poured in a dozen points, extending its lead to 54-31. After that, it was all Huskies.

Debbie Teske came off the bench to score 15 points, while Denise Dove and Cindy Conner both chipped in 14 points apiece. Dove regained some of that 3-point magic that has been missing lately, hitting four-of-six from beyond the three-point line.

“Denise Dove was back in form,” Albright said. “Lisa Foss had an unusually great game as far as her passing game.”

Albright and Co. will be back in action on Monday when the

SC’s highest scoring team, Valparaiso, invades Chick Evans Field House.
