In Saturday’s Tugs matches, Phi Kappa Psi knocked off Delta Chi in the Tugs Championship match and Phi Sigma Kappa defeated the reigning champion Sigma Nu for the third place title.
Phi Kappa Psi was able to defeat Delta Chi in three ropes in the Tugs championship match to round out the tournament.
The first and third rope for Phi Kappa Psi were won in dominant fashion, getting the knot to the first trench in under 10 minutes in both ropes.
Phi Kappa Psi was able to win the first rope by having the knot in their possession once time expired.
“It was fun,” said freshman physical education major and Phi Kappa Psi fourth trench tugger Christian Nessler. “I put my own personality into what I did, it was a great time.”
The second rope was more tightly contested, as neither Phi Kappa Psi nor Delta Chi were able to secure the knot in their first trench. Phi Kappa Psi was able to hold the advantage in their favor when time expired for a second rope win.
The third rope was won easily by Phi Kappa Psi, as they secured the knot in their first trench by the 6:30 mark, winning the match in 11 minutes.
The defending Tugs champions, Sigma Nu, were handed its second straight loss in the 2025 Tugs tournament, falling in three ropes to Phi Sigma Kappa in the third-place match.
“After Thursday, we knew we had a job to do, and this was our mission, this was our goal and we got it done,” said Phi Sigma Kappa first rope caller and junior political science major Maximilian Jarmula.
Phi Sigma Kappa won the first rope by controlling the knot and keeping it in their possession when time expired.
The second rope was controlled by Phi Sigma Kappa, as they got the knot to their first trench 11 minutes into the rope and were able to get the knot to their second trench around the 19 minute mark before time expired.
Phi Sigma Kappa was able to win the match after the third rope was conceded by Sigma Nu 17 minutes in.
“It means a lot to get a victory,” Jarmula said. “For the last 17 years, we’ve (Phi Sigma Kappa) been in the top three. We have to keep that legacy going, we have to keep the dynasty going. It’s not a first place championship, but we kept on the dynasty and it feels really good.”
Prior to the championship, Alpha Sigma Phi was victorious in its match for fifth place against Phi Kappa Theta.
Alpha Sigma Phi won its first rope over Phi Kappa Theta by having a two-foot advantage after time expired.
The second rope was also won by Alpha Sigma Phi after time expired, sending the match to a third rope.
Alpha Sigma Phi was able to win the match in the third rope to secure a fifth place finish in the Tugs tournament.
