Student arrested for phone prank

An NIU student who said he was trying to figure out who was prank-calling his room was arrested Thursday for the same offense.

Ketan Shah, 18, 1237 Grant South, was charged by University Police with telephone harassment after he called another student who lives on campus and hung up without saying anything, said UP Detective Curt Underwood.

The victim had a trap on his line and police were able to trace the call to Shah’s room, Underwood said.

“It’s a real mess and I’m getting frustrated,” Shah said.

Shah and another resident on his floor have been getting prank calls which have music on in the background, he said. Shah got one of the calls Tuesday night, he said.

Shah said he called the Douglas Hall resident and hung up to see if the person had the same music on in the background.

Apparently, there is a feud going on between Shah and the victim, Underwood said.

“One phone call is enough to get you in trouble,” said NIU Judicial Officer Larry Bolles. “You don’t have to make three or four calls at NIU. If we catch you harassing someone, we won’t wait until it happens again.”
