‘Doing us proud’
February 28, 1991
I have noticed something about your “Letters to the Editor” section.
This is my first semester reading The Northern Star and I hope this semester has been an exception. I read this paper everyday and have seen very few, if any, positive letters to the editor.
I realize those who disagree with something are more likely to write and voice their opinion. But surely (possibly?) one out of 20 students might have a positive feeling to write about.
I do, and that is why I am writing. No pot shots at NIU administrators, professors or students. No, I am writing concerning our basketball teams.
I attended my first game of the year this Saturday, and thoroughly enjoyed the systematic dismantling of the Cleveland State squad.
And please … before anyone jumps on me for this being my first game of the season, please realize I began attending school Jan. 14.
Also, I commute 45 miles each way, each day of the week and work full-time to go with my 14 hours of classes.
But it was well worth the drive to enjoy the game and cheer our Huskies on. I won’t have a chance to attend another game this year, but I’m behind our teams all the way.
I won’t have a chance to attend a women’s game at all, but I follow them. I regret I will not have a chance to see Lisa Foss play. If I lived in DeKalb, I would attend.
I feel our whole university should be extremely proud of both teams, and give them total devotion and support.
The women’s team will undoubtedly make the NCAA tournament, and as I heard on Chet Coppock’s radio sports show this evening, it would be “a crime” if the men’s team and Coach Mo weren’t invited.
There are not many institutions in the nation that will send both men’s and women’s teams to the NCAA tournaments, and I just want to say to all of the players:
I truly appreciate all of your time, effort, and dedication, as do many others here! Keep up the great work, you are “doing us proud.”
Go Huskies!
