Protect country
January 28, 1991
It now matters not who is right and who is wrong in the Persian Gulf issue. As I write this letter, our country is at war and nine Americans are missing in action, presumed dead (Jan. 19).
What matters now, and is of dire concern to all, is that we make every effort to preserve and protect the foundation of what we all believe makes this country so great – the U.S. Constitution.
The Constitution that set precedents for democracy around the world, and made the United States the first country in history that grants freedom to whomever may seek it.
I’m sure the authors of the U.S. Constitution would turn in their graves if they were to see Joe Rebholz, a political science/ public law student, state that “pathetically ignorant protesters…should be imprisoned and dealt with harshly” (Jan. 18).
Does this not suggest visions of the recent Tiennamen Square massacre in communist China?
Let’s just remember that although war is not for the timid, neither is peace. These are trying times for all, and let’s not dismantle at home the very democracy which we attempt to sponsor throughout the world.
