Swimmers fall short

After two losses last weekend, the NIU women’s swimming team fell to 2-4. The Huskies lost a Friday dual meet at the University of Notre Dame, 172-122, and also came up short in a 167-118 Saturday afternoon home meeting with the University of Iowa.

There were some solid individual performances and those efforts overshadow the injury-limited team results. In Coach Mike Burt’s opinion, they also are cause for optimism toward the end of the season and in swimming, the end of the season performances are the most important.

In Friday’s loss at Notre Dame, Kristin Scholz was a double-winner claiming the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.21) and the 200-yard version (2:13.12) while Pam Jackson was her usual blue-ribbon performer in the 50-yard freestyle (:25.13).

Other Huskie first-place finishers were Linda Matz, 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.28); Kim Bell, 200-yard individual medley (2:19.07); and diver Jenny Horoky (225.675 for three-meter).
