Incorrect focus

I would like to respond to Mark McGowan’s article “Abortion ‘Evils’ Discussed” (Monday, Jan. 28). I feel the article, while factually correct, misrepresented the ecumenical pro-life program as a whole.

The article read, “People against abortion will have to make hard decisions about ways to prevent pregnancy if they truly are pro-life.”

The article went on for eight paragraphs discussing Father Tom Coy’s Catholic view that contraceptives are not an acceptable way of prevention pregnancy if one is truly pro-life.

This is not necessarily the view of everyone who was in attendance. Father Tom Coy played a very minor role in the program as a whole.

He did the closing prayer and added a few comments on his own personal view which included the contraceptives issue. Only two paragraphs then followed on the primary speaker, Dr. Brewer, a former abortionist.

I feel the article misrepresented the views of many pro-life people by saying that Father Coy’s view was one of all truly pro-life individuals.

I also feel the article distorted the focus of the program by placing too much emphasis on a very minute part.

The focus was not the contraceptives issue but rather anti-abortion.
