Taking 14th place in a field of 14 teams on Monday, NIU women’s golf traveled to San Marcos, Texas, to compete in the Jim West Challenge, hosted by Texas State University.
The Huskies’ final score for the invitational was 920, 56 over par. NIU finished 23 points behind The University of New Mexico, the next team in the standings. New Mexico finished tied with the University of Notre Dame, with both schools finishing 33-over par.
NIU’s best round of the invitational was the first round on Sunday, with a score of 16 over par, 304.
Texas A&M University took first at the invitational, winning by one stroke. They finished with a score of 15 under par, 849.
The University of Houston’s senior Natalie Saint Germain was the individual champion of the event with a score of 10 under par, 206.
The top finisher for the Huskies at the invitational was sophomore Mia Raines, who tied for 43rd place. Raines fell 15 spots after a score of 5 over par in the final round, finishing with a score of 224, 8 over par.
Graduate student Caroline Kent and sophomore Dakota Tallent both tied for 65th place with scores of 15 over par, 231. Kent’s best score of the weekend was in round one with 74 strokes, 2 over par.
Tallent scored a 3 over par, 75, in the second frame for her best round of the weekend.
Freshman Emile Chile finished tied for 72nd place with a score of 24 over par, 240. A third round score of 1 over par, 73, helped Chile rise five spots in the final rankings to 72nd place.
Sophomore Alexa Ouellet was the final Huskie on the leaderboard, finishing in 77th place with a score of 32 over par, 248. Ouellet’s score of 14 over par, 86, in the final round on Monday, caused her to fall four spots into last place.
