Court Just Fine
November 6, 1990
I am writing in response to your editorial of Oct. 24 about the delay in the nomination of Supreme Court Justices.
First, there is not, as you stated, “no court for students to turn to.” There are now enough justices on the court for it to operate, and President McCormack could leave the court the way it is for the rest of the year, if he so desired.
Second, nomination of justices has not taken three weeks. The candidates were brought up for nomination on Oct. 14, the additional moninations were put off for a week on Oct. 21, and came up again Oct. 28. That makes two weeks on my calendar.
Third, the purpose of the supreme court is not “to make sure the rules are followed,” the purpose of the Supreme Court is to interpret the Constitution.
Fourth, if President McCormack wished to delay his nominations for a week to prevent a renewal of hostilities, that is his decision, and he should be praised for sticking to it, not blasted by people who are unaware of the issues.
If you are going to continue to say nasty things about the Student Association Senate, at least make sure your facts are correct.
