Examine lives
November 30, 1990
Before this matter is put to rest I would like to add something to this vegetarian bobcat issue. Jeffrey Smolla began it by casting light on the irony that we may condemn this predator for beating us to the kill.
The parallel between this animal’s behavior and our own, sadly enough, continues in regard to its excess.
Just as this predator’s killing spree may have drawn attention to itself that may ultimately result in its demise, so too may our own excess.
Our own lust for animal flesh has filled our collective veins with cholesterol and created an industry which pollutes our waters and creates an immense demand for grain.
This results in the consumption of more fossil fuels and the spread of pesticides and other chemicals across our country.
The bobcat issue affords us a valuable opportunity for reflection and a reexamination of our own excessive lifestyles. Just as this animal’s lust for meat may precipitate its death, so may ours.
