Crash pure accident

Mark Morgan probably was not doing barrel rolls when he accidentally crashed Saturday.
“It’s a very simple (crash). The guy went up and he rolled over, and when he came back his right wing hit the ground and that was the end of it,” said Mort Edelstein, public affairs officer for the Federal Aviation Administration.
Edelstein said the FAA investigation ended Monday.
Morgan became the first fatal accident victim in two decades when his home-built Pitts Acrobatic airplane crashed on take off from the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday. He bought the plane earlier this year.
Morgan, 32, of Lombard, was alive when he crashed, said DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller. Morgan died from smoke inhalation “in a matter of seconds,” and didn’t go through any pain because he was unconscious. Miller is ruling out foul play.
“The crash did not kill him,” Miller said. “It only took one or two breaths” of smoke before Morgan died, he said.
Although eyewitnesses told investigators they thought Morgan entered into a barrel roll on take off, Edelstein doubts their testimony.
Only an “experienced pilot could tell” the difference between a pilot deliberately entering into a roll and someone tipped over by the wind, Edelstein said.
“Nobody knows” if Morgan tried a roll. “Only he would know that.”
Saturday’s weather was ideal for outside activity. There was a 10 mph wind from the southwest.
Morgan was found in his seat and the plane was sitting on its belly, Miller said.
