Dancers plan concert
November 20, 1990
Northern Dance Theatre will perform a dance concert featuring the NIU Alumni Guest artists Nov. 29, 30, and Dec. 1 at 8 p.m., and Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. in the Stevens Building O’Connell Theatre.
Opening the evening is “Un Poco de Todo,” directed by Lila H. Dole. This number will feature a variety of dances including the “Castilla,” the “Cumbia,” “Mazurca de las Sombrillos,” “Danza de la Perdicion,” and “Sevillanas.”
The second offering is the “Pas de Six” from “La Esmerelda,” which was choreographed by Jules Perrot and Marius Petipa and reconstructed by Randall Newsom. The piece is based on Victor Hugo’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
Featured next is the American premier of P.D.Q. Bach’s (also known as Peter Schickele) “The Preachers of Crimetheus” which was written for and performed by the Ballet de Monte Python. This adaptation was choreographed by Isadora Graham Bell (Jere Tulk).
The fourth selection, “Sing, Sing, Sing” is set in a giant ballroom where the NDT will strut their stuff. The number is styled from the work of Jack Cole who, in the ‘40s and ’50s, worked out a variety of precise, athletic movements that suited Big Band music. The show is choreographed by Gary Flannery, who was in the original Broadway and touring companies of Bob Fosse’s smash, “Dancin.‘”
The final selection of the concert is a tribute to the members of the Nazi Holocaust entitled “In Memorium.” The dancers appearing in the second half of “In Memorium” are the first members of the Alumni Dance Company.
This company is the professional branch of the NDT which will act as a bridge between NIU and the world of professional dance. These alumni have performed with companies such as Akasha, Los Preferidos, Ensemble Espanol, Joel Hall, Dancescape, Ballet Chicago, and in Ruth Page’s “Nutcracker.”
The box office will open ticket sales for the show on Nov. 26. Call 753-1600 or 753-1609 for ticket information.
