Not all laws just

I whole-heartedly disagree with Andrea Morgensen’s letter on Nov. 6 stating the 50 million Americans who smoke pot “are making criminals out of themselves.”

Morgensen’s statement that “to have a civilized society, we must choose to obey all laws” flies in the face of reason.

Laws often have hidden agendas, many based on prejudices. We need only look at Nazi Germany for a good example.

Martin Luther King Jr. once stated, “In a civilized society, it is the duty of all citizens to obey just laws. But at the same time, it is the duty of all citizens to disobey unjust laws.”

I do not advocate that all Americans smoke pot. However, millions of American pot smokers are not criminals for breaking unjust laws.

It’s time for the government and its citizens to reconsider the War on Drugs. Open, truthful discussion of the facts is needed, not simplistic slogans like “Just Say No!”

Marijuana is not the “killer weed” it has been pointed to be (by an allegedly liberal media), ignorance is.

Educated Americans should support education, not incarceration. As an alternative to “Just Say No,” how about “Just Say Know!”
