Confused point
November 19, 1990
This is in regards to Robert Skwarek’s recent letters to The Northern Star.
Skwarek complained about alleged false advertising by MTV and the Campus Activities Board’s sponsorship of Bob Dylan.
Well, Bob, I think you missed the point concerning MTV’s “Rock the Vote” ad campaign.
The whole idea was to make viewers aware of the censorship issue, to make them find out where political candidates stand on censorship and to vote accordingly.
Apparently, you thought a referendum concerning censorship would appear on the ballot; however, referendums apply mainly to local issues.
Rest assured, I’m not defending MTV, because I think their approach to the censorship issue is somewhat hypocritical.
For example, they edited the word “underage” from Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Do Me,” yet for $15 and the cost of a 900-number phone call, you can buy an MTV “Censorship is UnAmerican” T-shirt!
Finally, regarding Bob Dylan and the other “second-rate” shows you accuse CAB of sponsoring, evidently you missed the Smithereens, who put on one hell of a show the week before the Dylan concert.
