After going 2-0 in singles and helping clinch the doubles point in NIU’s match against Illinois State University on Saturday, senior Iker Gaztambide Arrastia has been named the Northern Star’s Huskie of the Week.
Playing at No. 1 singles, Gaztambide Arrastia secured wins against IU Indy senior Eli Mercer and Illinois State senior Tomas Valencia, each in two sets. The win against Mercer was Gaztambide Arrastia’s 50th career singles win.
Gaztambide Arrastia and doubles partner senior Federico Scotuzzi also won their match at No. 1 doubles against Illinois State, helping to set up the clinching match at No. 2 doubles.
Gaztambide Arrastia was named the MAC Player of the Week, as well as the MAC Doubles Team of the Week with Scotuzzi.
This is Gaztambide Arrastia’s first career Huskie of the Week and the first of the season for men’s tennis.
NIU men’s tennis returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday against Xavier University at Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House.
The next Huskie of the Week will be announced Feb. 2.
The Northern Star sports section’s Huskie of the Week is voted for on a weekly basis. Student-athletes considered for this week’s edition were selected based on their performance in competitions taking place from Jan. 19 to Jan. 25.
